Outvoted, and Thanked for It

Today I was in a meeting where I disagreed with the group on an issue. Big surprise, I know.

In the end, I was out voted. That happens.

What stood out to me was what happened after the meeting. My boss came to me and thanked me for having a different opinion and for speaking up.

That says a lot about our culture.

The strongest teams are not made up of people who always agree. They are made up of people who can respectfully challenge ideas, ask difficult questions, and still leave the room united behind the mission.

In healthcare, that kind of culture is critical. When people feel comfortable speaking up, challenging assumptions, and offering a different perspective, it helps us take better care of our patients, take better care of each other, and ultimately take better care of our organization.

Good leaders do not surround themselves with agreement. They create environments where people are challenged to think deeper, grow, and make better decisions together.
